Whether you’re renovating your home or just doing a quick refresh, most of us have to keep a budget in mind these days. And while it’s exciting to find a good bargain, there are some things worth spending the extra money on. Sometimes, you do get what you pay for, and the quality of your purchase is reflected in the price tag. This might be pricey in the short term, but over the long term, you’re likely to spend less money as you won’t be paying to replace or repair items since they’re probably well-made. Below, seven home products totally worth the upfront cost.
Sofas
A good sofa is essential for several reasons. First of all, your sofa makes or breaks the style of your living room—it’s usually the first thing people notice when they walk in!
Another reason to splurge is quality according to interior designer Kate Dawson. “We spend a lot of time sitting and lying down. So, these pieces will get more wear and tear than anything else you own. Make sure you get a piece that is well-made and can take a beating,” she explains.
Replacing a sofa after a few years ends up being far more costly and frustrating than just splurging on a good one in the first place.
Mattresses
Sleep quality can have a major impact on your health and the quality of your life. A night spent tossing and turning means you won’t feel good the next day. So, why cheap out on the most important thing to help you sleep? Most mattresses last seven to ten years, so a mattress is a long-term investment. If you can’t justify this purchase—do the math and see how much it will cost you per year. You just might change your mind.
Comforters
Other than a good mattress, a nice fluffy down comforter can help you relax and get to sleep. It’s like wrapping yourself up in a cloud at the end of a long day. While sheets and duvets are also extremely important, you can often find them at a discount. High-quality, but inexpensive down comforters are very few and far between, and a cheaply-made one rarely has the same feeling as a pricier one does.
Dressers
You might think you can get away with a cheap dresser until one day you can’t close the drawer no matter how hard you try—or the drawer comes out of the track and nearly falls on you (yikes). While you don’t sit on them, dressers get way more wear and tear than you think because you often need to access them multiple times a day, so durability is key.
Desk Chairs
Do you work from home and spend all day in your chair? Why be uncomfortable? Going for a higher-end desk chair that supports your body isn’t just about aesthetics—you’ll actually be more productive! Try to find a desk chair with armrests, as well as adjustable features such as height and back tilt.
Built-In Shelving
If you are renovating your home, Dawson recommends spending the extra cash on built-in shelving. “Custom built-ins are definitely worth the splurge. Not only does it add value to your home, it also adds character and style while giving you the storage you need to display books, personal collections, pictures, and small plants,” she says.
While the designer says that you typically see custom cabinets and bookshelves in the living room or TV room, she also thinks they’re great for bedrooms. “Built-ins are especially useful in kids’ rooms, where shelving is always needed. Plus, it’s easy to create a built-in desk that matches the bookcases perfectly. This can give your child an organized and comfortable space for studying.”
Vacuums
A high-quality vacuum, such as a Miele or Dyson, is always worth the money, especially if you have pets. No one wants to live in a dirty home, and having a vacuum that doesn’t pick up all of the dirt, dust, and allergens isn’t just frustrating, it can also make you sick. Having a high-quality appliance with a HEPA filter, tools and a variety of modes instantly makes your home cleaner, smell better, and feel more elevated.
